African Drumming Ireland is one of the leading providers of Professional, Educational and fun Drumming Workshops in Ireland.
Our Drumming programs in Schools have kept thousands of Students and Teachers enthralled and actively focused participants, in every aspect of our workshops. Simply put students – love it !
What is it all about ?
Our African Drumming workshops for schools have been growing in popularity each year.
Its high success rate with students and adults has encouraged and fostered a love of West African Music, Rhythm and Culture in Primary and Secondary schools in Ireland, opening students to new musical and life experiences. We introduce the basic rhythmic concepts of West African and World percussion to schoolchildren through Drumming, Chanting, Singing, Body Percussion, Call and Response and storytelling.
Using the West African Djembe (pronounced djem – bay) students assemble in the drum circle. This is a safe, facilitated, non-competitive space where we learn to explore our connection to Rhythm and Sound using a variety of percussion instruments, bells, shakers etc. All the school needs to provide are the seats and the room. We do the rest. We can currently cater for classes of up to 34. Even the most disconnected student will find it hard to resist the powerful urge to be part of a musical ensemble and hit the drum. Drumming is contagious. Everybody even the teachers want to be involved!

Why Drumming?
Drumming together is a powerful method of building children’s confidence and self-esteem. Because it’s so much fun beating a drum children learn the magic of:
Developing listening skills and focus
Teamwork
Cooperation not competition
Being creative
Voice work – through simple call and response songs
How to make music together (Great way to learn about Cultural Diversity)
Leadership skills – directing the whole group
Making music and having fun
Can everybody Drum?
Yes everybody can Drum – even the Teachers ! All age groups are catered for .
As Irish children, generally have never had any in-depth exposure to African cultures, Drumming can be a way of breaking down barriers at a social level and forming friendships. Drumming can also help to integrate children from different backgrounds and beliefs into a new school environment as drumming can be taught purely visually without words.
“When a class first begins to drum together as a group they are all equal in their ability and musical understanding as the drum is totally new to them. Through the process of cooperation and listening to each other, a bonding happens in order to create the overall musical sound. This inclusion extends to all members of the group. As the African proverb says “ The drum knows no colour”.
